The Bible doesn’t tell us precise moment-by-moment details about what happens when we die but we do know a few things for sure. We know that because Jesus died and was resurrected, we will be too (1 Thessalonians 4:14). We know that this will be a bodily resurrection but we will be changed (Philippians 3:20-21). We know this resurrection will happen when Jesus returns (1 Thessalonians 4:16) but we don’t know when he will return (2 Peter 3:9). In the meantime, what happens to people who die? Jesus told the criminal on the cross beside him – the criminal who believed Jesus was the Son of God – that today, he would be in paradise with him (Luke 23:42-43). The great Anglican scholar, N.T. Wright, sums this up by saying Christians believe in life after life after death (First, life with God as we await the general bodily resurrection, and then life on earth with all the other believers who have been resurrected.) This link will take you to a lot of Scripture passages about resurrection if you would like to explore more on your own.
